I was diagnosed with Trigeminal neuralgia Jan 2010, had it for three weeks and then in Jan this year I got it again, although quite briefly. It was on my right temple/side both times. On Friday evening last I got what I thought was the same thing but this time on the left. I went to the doctors this morning and after checking me out by holding my jaw and moving it around, he said that it isn't neuralgia. He said it was an inflammation of the jawbone, apparently its quite common and more women than men get it. He tells me to just take paracetamol and maybe use a hot water bottle against my temple and it should settle down in a couple of weeks.....but it is killing me.... I mean it feels exactly the same as the neuralgia. The worst pain is in the top of my head and seemingly in my ear.....could he be wrong? Could it be neuralgia but on the other side???? I have amyitripylene for that....but he said not to take it, as it's not neuralgia! HELP!!!!

This is a most unusual story.

Who diagnosed the right sided Trigeminal neuralgia? However let us assume that it was the correct diagnosis for the moment.
Recurrent trigeminal neuralgia ( if true) on the opposite side, is quite unusual.

The pain could well be coming from the temperomandibular joint, but only your doctor who is best placed can...

The pain could well be coming from the temperomandibular joint, but only your doctor who is best placed can say.

Difficult.....continue with the doctors advice and reassess the situation tomorrow.
I would have thought that Ibuprofen 400mgms taken now, might be of help, with the Paracetamol.

Thank you Sqad, I knew I could rely on you! I guess I really wanted to know if it was possible to get neuralgia on the other side and you've answered that!Unfortunately I can't take Ibuprofen as I have Chronic Pyelonephritis. I shall keep going as long as I can but I am in agony.....and as I have a good threshold to pain it must be bad!!! Cheers
If your GP prescribed Carbamazepine for the neuralgia and you have any left, it won't harm to take a dose to see if it helps.
I feel for you. The worst pain ever.
