Hi Sqad midge here. Do you remember me telling you about my 87 y.o. mum bleeding from back passage. Well, been to hospital yesterday for above, she has internal piles and also they think diverticulitis - she has to go for a barium meal enema on Monday morning to qualify this. The Doc says it's because of a poor diet when she was younger, which I can understand and she has been told to eat more vegetables and fibre, but if I'm not there, or she's not here she won't do it because it's too much trouble, how can I make her see this is for her own good.

Look at it this way....the bleeding is from the piles, diverticulitis? so what.........most people have some degree of diverticulitis which doesn't cause too much trouble....if any.
If she were my mum....aged 87 years of age......I would not restrict her to any diet. That is my personal opinion.

I agree with everybody else. She is 87 years old and set in her ways. Let her eat what she enjoys. It might be worth encouraging her to drink more. I know a lot of elderly people who drink very little - just the occasional cup of tea.
Having said that it was a nightmare trying to get my elderly mum to drink.

Totally! Loads of people have diverticulosis which can occasionally become inflamed and bleed. If her diet was that bad how'd she get to 87? LoftyLottie is right though so the fluid might be worth pushing a bit but if there's nothing sinister at colonoscopy. I take it they did sigmoidoscopy if they asked for barium enema (for completion probably). There's a better xray examination out there called CT Colonography. It's a lot easier for the elderly so if it's available in your area ask for it. BB
