Hi - one of my sons has just arrived back from a weekend away with a finger that is purple and swollen - a frisbee incident apparently. It is painful, but he can move it. Does that mean it's not broken? I've wrapped some ice in a tea towel to rest it on, what else should I be doing? He is 17

No, I could still move my fingers when I broke them.

Best thing to do is to strap it to the next finger. That's what the hospital would do if it was broken.

Thanks ummmm , I'll get the micropore out. Do we need to go to A&E or drs tomorrow?
I think it depends how painful it is. As soon as it's strapped it's less painful.
Nah, as long as he has no pins and needles or no numbness, there is nothing A&E will do apart from strap it up. I injured a finger a few months back, just strapped it up and took ibuprofen and it was fine.
Has the nail been trapped, might need the nail drilled if there is blood underneath

Thanks for help, nail looks ok - whole thing looks like a halloween prop though! It's not agony so hopefully it'll be ok.
When I broke my toe years ago, I only knew because it sounded like a pencil breaking - yuck! The pain came later
You don't say which finger and if it looks deformed (crooked), but as long as it is not dislocated, then I agree with the other ABers.

Middle one and looks straight, just very puffy and bruised/ purple. Thanks for advice :)
Allie...OK......then no big deal.........Ibuprofen should do the trick.
Question Author
He is already on co codamol 30/500 for shoulder pain, so just continue with those, or ibruprofen as well. Thanks
Allied...depends....if the co-codamol relieves the finger pain, then stick with the, but if the finger is still painful then add Ibuprofen 400mgms up to three times a day.
