Ask the Pharmacist for liquid painkiller, there is (so I am told) an awful lot of salt in the fizzy, soluble kind

This is for a woman in her early 70s who has considerable hip pain but refuses to see her doctor. She's been taking 450mg of aspirin 4 times a day (half the maximum recommended daily dose) but starting to experience stomach discomfort.
I'll ask her what she would like to try.

Paracetemol will not affect the stomach unlike aspirin

neither should be taken to maximum over a long period, without medical supervision. Why won't she go to the doctor, sandy? It might be that something like a prescription for an anti-inflammatory drug could ease her pain considerably. It'll only get worse, the longer she leaves it.

Why must it be "soluble?"

Surely the drug of choice in the case of your friend is Ibuprofen...at least 400 mgms a go.

She says she can't swallow pills, hence the need for something dispersible. There was an article in the press recently about aspirin and she even stopped taking them for a while.
I don't know why she won't go to see her doctor. I do know that she's become very anxious and the prospect of being on her own, even for an hour or so, frightens her.

Might be worth asking a pharmacist about suppositories, if she has no issues with them.

They're quite the usual thing in France, work quicker, don't affect the stomach (obviously!) and require a lower dose.

I'll talk to her daughter and ask if she could be there for a home visit. Something needs to be done. I'm starting to feel that the stress of the whole situation is doing me no good.

sandyr why can't you get the doctor out, surely that would be the best course of action. It's not as though she can get there if she is in considerable pain.
