Any one know if the thyroid treatment is dangerous? o.h. been on carbimazole for 18 years, and they now want to do the iodine treatment. She had breast cancer 20 years ago, and is also on warfarin for a possible problem at the back of the heart. should She go ahead? we were told that long term use of carbimazole can cause leukemia.

I was on Carbimazole for about 10 years, until it stopped working for me and wouldn't control my escalating overactive thyroid. I was offered the radio active iodine treatment, in fact it was quite scary how forceful the medics were in trying to persuade me. I chose not to have it, after doing my research into possible long term side affects. I had surgery to remove all my thyroid gland, as I also had numerous nodules.

I think it is a personal choice, Percy, but with your wife's medical problems, should be looked into at length.

I didn't think it was for me, but others may feel differently. I wish her well with her decision. xx

thanks towie, she now has nodules, but the problem is that she shakes a lot and feels down lots of the time, so its a bit of a catch 22, will the treatment make her feel better or just mean She has to change tablets. all a concern.
thanks,
Perc.
Percy, the treatment, whether it be, surgery or radio active iodine, will almost certainly change from overactive to underactive, which means Thyroxine meds are then prescribed. It may take a while to get the correct dosage. I think perhaps you both need to ask a lot more questions to your consultant before signing on the dotted line.

Here is a link to a wonderful website called Thyroid UK which can answer many searching questions. I will find the link and post it.
In my experience, opinion and those of others in the field of Endocrinology, radioactive iodine is a safe treatment of hyperthyroidism.
