I used to give blood but not give platelets instead. The only downside to this is that is has to be done at a Blood Centre not at any other location. See link below for details:

I used to, they used to call me to the hospital to give it "fresh" for operations, but I had to stop due to medical problems.

I'm going back a few years now, don't know if they still call peeps to the hospital to give.
Question Author
Mrs chappie i couldnt give for some time, due to my iron count being to low
@ Mrs Chappie - The practice of calling in live donors to hospital to give fresh blood for an operation is long gone, in the developed world at least, but it is very interesting to hear from someone who did it ;) The practice was gradually phased out, with rarer blood groups being the last to be discontinued. Fascinating to hear from someone who participated.

What you can still find is the practice of "directed donations" in many developing countries - the health infrastructure is insufficiently developed to a fully fledged blood donation service - whereby family members go in to donate blood for a relative undergoing a procedure where blood might be required.
I'm B Positive which is one of 8%
