Hip replacement

I am due to have a full hip replacement on the 30th of April..........never had a 'major' operation before and I am quite concerned.Anyone here could put my mind at rest?...........mainly worried about the pain afterwards.

My best friend had a hip replacement two or three years ago when she had just turned 60. She said the post-operative pain was nothing at all compared with what she had been suffering with the dodgy hip. She was quickly back on her feet and playing tennis at quite a high standard again within three months or so. She said it was really important to do all the recommended exercises.

I have had both hips replaced............the only post operative pain was from piles. Piece of cake from the pain point of view.

Drain in your thigh for 48hours which will come out...........standing up within 24-48 hours depending upon how you have done.

Home in a week ....back to normal between 6 weeks and 6 months......everybody is different.

To echo other comments, my mother had both of hers replaced (at different times, of course), and the small amount of pain she felt for only a few short days afterwards was nothing compared to the agony that she was in beforehand. Full mobility too.

My sister has had a number of them. Obviuosly it is a major op, but she comes through ok each time so I think you just need to hang on in there while it all heals and then you'll be grateful for the improved mobility. I do not recall her being in any major pain, discomfort maybe. They know how to sort pain at the hospital, before you know it you will be back on your feet running marathons again.

Hi chrissy, like sqad I have had two hip replacements. Post operative pain totally controlled (I didn't have a drain in my hip). Was in the gym the day after the op walking on parallel bars. Driving after 8 weeks and back to work a week later. Like you it was my first op and I was scared stiff. However, compared to giving birth it was a piece of cake. You will know such a difference.

My mum had a Charnley hip replacement in Derby 21 years ago - she is now 95 and it's as good as new. I remember she was very conscientious about doing her physio at the time, though.

Jumbo....Charnley Prosthesis.....the best.....better than these new bloody fangled non cemented ceramic hips.

My hips are 26 years old now..............not a bit of pain since.
