Ok, so i know there's a lot of you who hate smokers and i really don't want anyone coming on here telling me that i was scum before i made this decision - but i'm trying to give up, and have just started a course of champix (i'm on day 4) and so far my actual quit date has been set for next wednesday. it occurred to me that i may need a little support from friends on AB over the next few weeks so if any of you have any positive vibes to send my way, any advice or support would be gratefully received xxxx

You couldn't pick a better thing to do to improve your health. If you got through 20 a day in the past you'll be saving nearly £3000 a year.
Congratulations on deciding to stop.
I packed in 7 weeks ago, never felt so poorly since.Sorry.

THank you Sandy. Everhelpful - i've been reading up on all of this - the coughing/spluttering and feeling lousy is all to do with the tar etc thats been built up in your system being released - it will pass and you'll feel better. well done - 7 weeks is really good! keep it up!! xxxx
I stopped smoking 40 a day in the 90s. Best thing I ever did, though it was tough at them time.
Put the money you would spend on cigs in a jar every day and use the money for extravagant little treats, or save it for something big you've been lusting after.
I wish I smoked, 'cos I could give up and save a bleeding fortune.
Good luck Nini74. I've heard geat things about these pills, from a friend in the US. Me??? It's my only vice and I live on my own. I am trying to cut down though.
Hi Nini74, first of all good luck. I quit 3 years ago and it was really a walk in the park for me. I did it with the help of these electronic cigarettes. For a while they were giving me a bit of nicotine but all the "ambience"(for lack of a better word) was missing. After about 2 months with these I put them away and have never looked back or even been tempted. I hope you will have as easy a time as I had.
just wanted to say good luck. I gave up 3 months today :-)
Stick with Nini74, I stopped nearly 3 years ago made up my mind not to have another. There are times when I really fancy one but I don't think I want to go through all the hassle of smelling like an ashtray all time and drowning myself with body spray to cover up the smell, and then the anxiety of trying to give it up all over again. The only thing I will advise is watch what you eat. Food tastes better ...oh fresh baked bread and butter....So the weight may creep on, watch that and eat sensibly.
Eeeek! I've just worked out that if me and my wife were still smoking we'd be spending £10k a year. Ridiculous waste of money. I stopped when I was diagnosed with asthma, my wife stopped at the same time.
I gave up my 50 a day habit 7 years ago. One of the best things I ever did!!
I gave up smoking in 1998. After nearly killing my husband and son because everything got to me I started again 6 months later. The next time I give up will be when they screw the coffin lid down.
When I finally stopped in 1998, I didn't tell anyone. Previous attempts had been scuppered by people asking me every five minutes how I was doing. That only reminded me of the weed and initiated the cravings.
Daughter and son-in-law are on day 68 of no smoking. They both went to one of those 'Quit Smoking' shops, were given the tablets (don't know if they're the same as yours) They both had some side affects i.e. sicky feeling, but both have done so well. They both have days when they want a ciggy (daughter had an op yesterday so that's been difficult) so far so good - so proud of them for sticking to it and long may it last. The one thing I notice is the lack of that horrible smell. Good luck in what will be hard at times. Feel very proud of yourself for getting this far, keep us posted xxxx

thank you all - i'm kind of keeping it quiet amongst my friends and in work etc because i know that them asking about it will make me keep thinking about it....so its great to come on here and already have received so much support. I wonder whether we could have an AB thread for people giving up - seems that there's a few of us just starting to, or in the first few weeks/months of having done so......
I didnt use anything. I went on hols with my mum who I never smoked infront of, so by time I got back all nicotine was out my system and I knew it was all in my head so never touched one since
Well done on giving it a go....get a jar and save your money in it for a massive treat for yourself when you quit! And you will!!

New wardrobe or a holiday.....

Chuffed for you day 4 already xxxxxx keep us posted xxxxx
P.S. My daughter said the best thing about going in for her op was, when asked if she smoked, she could honestly say no!
My dad 'gave up' using some sort of tablets (might have been champix) at a really difficult time in his life and two weeks ago (when I last saw him) the bugger was smoking again! Worked really well for him for about 18 months, no idea why he started again (ps - not anti-smoking, smoke myself) good luck, x
I never have any craving now but my mum who quit in 1968 still gets a craving when she smells a freshly lit fag, especially if it is lit with a match.
