How long did you put up with the hot flushes before you visited your doctor!
I'm a bit dubious about taking HRT [don't ask me why, I'm not sure myself]
Is there anything I can buy over the counter to alleviate the symptoms?

After a few weeks the hot flushes had practically disappeared, and I stopped using the cream altogether about a year ago. It worked brilliantly for me, and you can buy it on the internet and set up a regular order. It's about £24 a tube but lasts well and I would recommend giving it a try. It's worth shopping around to get a good price, but it's not too expensive just to try out for a couple of months
I went on HRT after suffering with dreadful night sweats. It was fantastic. Then I had a health scare which was enough to frighten me off the HRT. So here I am about 12 years on, still flushing. I've wasted £s and £s on every "remedy" known to man (or indeed woman) including the above mentioned black cohosh. I'm sure it may work for some women but nothing works for me. I just put up with it now and sleep with a fan whirring all night. OH says it's like sleeping at Heathrow. My purse is healthier too!
Think I had hot flushes for about three years.....I was generating enough heat to melt the polar ice caps.....then they tailed off, then stopped. Literally, just keep cool - stay sleeveless if it suits your temperature, lots of cool showers, even carry a little chinese fan. I don't trust pills unless in extremis.
Hi Cupid I wouldn't normally trust Internet medication, but I started by trying a tube from my sister, who is pretty careful about this sort of thing, then went on the Internet to buy it. It's made in the States by a 'woman owned, woman operated' company but there were no massive carriage charges, and I think the contact I found was based in the Channel islands. I just thought it would be worth a try, and whilst it worked for me it might not be the same for everyone.
Evening primrose capsules-easily purchased in most supermarkets. Don't stop the hot flushes but for me they lessen the intensity which makes them more bearable during the day and has all but stopped them during the night-one always wakes me up though-better than an alarm clock . My doctor could not care less-wouldn't even discuss it-made me feel I was wasting his time-guess he's lucky he doesn't get them!
I `ve been going through the menopause for 30 yrs & still get the flushes. I had hrt for about 10 years but had to stop. Since then I`ve tried every remedy going. The best I`ve found is Flash Fighters from Holland & Barret. Even though they don`t stop the flushes, they do ease them. I `ve also got a cooling pad under my pillow case which is very good at night time.
