How long did you put up with the hot flushes before you visited your doctor!
I'm a bit dubious about taking HRT [don't ask me why, I'm not sure myself]
Is there anything I can buy over the counter to alleviate the symptoms?

I didn't go to GP..like you didn't want HRT. I coped with them, sometimes
worse than others...nice in the winter, your own central heating system. lol
hi,
several months, been off HRT now for 15 months & no more probs, was on HRT for3 years, had wanted to stop a year earlier,my then doc, female, advised not
I have had them for 16yrs and still having them. I was on HRT for 5 years but my doc said 5yrs was enough. Then I tried something called Agreal which was withdrawn and the Black Cohash (useless) so just suffer. Wish there was a magic potion!
Have you tried asking in a health shop to see if they can recommend something?
A cousin of mine you to take Evening Primrose Oil 1000 mg and she said that used to help.
I have never visited my doctor about my menopause and associated symptoms. I have been having flushes for a few years now and I just live with them.
I used progest cream which my sister had recommended. After a few weeks the hot flushes had practically disappeared, and I stopped using the cream altogether about a year ago. It worked brilliantly for me, and you can buy it on the internet and set up a regular order. It's about £24 a tube but lasts well and I would recommend giving it a try. It's worth shopping around to get a good price, but it's not too expensive just to try out for a couple of months
If they are bothering you then go see your GP. I have them still, but they don't really bother me. My friend suffered much more.

Hello sheenamf, I am a bit dubious about buying medication on line. Is it not
available in a chemist?
I went on HRT after suffering with dreadful night sweats. It was fantastic. Then I had a health scare which was enough to frighten me off the HRT. So here I am about 12 years on, still flushing. I've wasted £s and £s on every "remedy" known to man (or indeed woman) including the above mentioned black cohosh. I'm sure it may work for some women but nothing works for me. I just put up with it now and sleep with a fan whirring all night. OH says it's like sleeping at Heathrow. My purse is healthier too!
I take flash fighters from Holland & Barrett, certainly an improvement.
I've been "flushing" for about three years. Spent pounds and nothing has helped. It's a horrible time of life and getting sleep is a nightmare.

Horseshoes..........I tried the fan, but it didn't really help. When I "flush" I cool down quickly afterwards and the fan just left me really cold.
I have tried all the OTC stuff and NOTHING worked for me...I just live with it (around 17 years and counting) tried HRT and that turned me into a teenaged nightmare again and didn't actually do much for the menopause symptoms. I wear natural fibres, drink load of water and live with it.
PS I used the progestogen cream and it did help for about 2 years then back to the flushes. I used the wellsprings one.
Think I had hot flushes for about three years.....I was generating enough heat to melt the polar ice caps.....then they tailed off, then stopped. Literally, just keep cool - stay sleeveless if it suits your temperature, lots of cool showers, even carry a little chinese fan. I don't trust pills unless in extremis.
My wife had hot flushes for quite a while and the pharmacist at Boots recommended a soya based product. I think it was called Phytosoya, or something similar and it really helped her. She was also told it would help to drink soya milk but she didn't go that far.
Hi Cupid I wouldn't normally trust Internet medication, but I started by trying a tube from my sister, who is pretty careful about this sort of thing, then went on the Internet to buy it. It's made in the States by a 'woman owned, woman operated' company but there were no massive carriage charges, and I think the contact I found was based in the Channel islands. I just thought it would be worth a try, and whilst it worked for me it might not be the same for everyone.
It's also made from natural plant ingredients and not tested on animals.
Evening primrose capsules-easily purchased in most supermarkets. Don't stop the hot flushes but for me they lessen the intensity which makes them more bearable during the day and has all but stopped them during the night-one always wakes me up though-better than an alarm clock . My doctor could not care less-wouldn't even discuss it-made me feel I was wasting his time-guess he's lucky he doesn't get them!
Have to admit it is hellish here when the heat gets up to and over 30°+so I jump into the pool and honestly am surprised that I do not sizzle! At night now, at last, we have a gentle air con, nothing freezing, but it helps such a lot, ne'er a flush!
I `ve been going through the menopause for 30 yrs & still get the flushes. I had hrt for about 10 years but had to stop. Since then I`ve tried every remedy going. The best I`ve found is Flash Fighters from Holland & Barret. Even though they don`t stop the flushes, they do ease them. I `ve also got a cooling pad under my pillow case which is very good at night time.
