I had my cholesterol checked (yep that old cherry again) - it is very high:
Total: 7.9
HDL: 0.89
LDL: 6.0
Though my Triglycerides are: 2.2 which appears to be good.
Total/HDL Chol Ratio: 8.9 (not quite sure what that means).
My question is, if my Triglycerides are within range, do I need to be worried I am at risk of a heart attack/stroke ?
Saw my Endo at Nuffield in Brentwood last night - my thyroid levels are o.k but my T.3 is still not (3.6).
I have put on some weight, which is why I think my cholesterol is raised.

Yepp....your total cholesterol level is high.
Your HDL (good stuff) is excellent.
Your LDL (bad stuff) is also high.
TC/HDL is also high.
As for your thyroid tests, you know how i feel about T3 estimations....a load of nonsense.............to me it is of little or no significance.
Do you need to take statins is what you are really asking...;-)
Well, there has been various publications quite recently (Munich Conference ) and other cardiological meetings suggesting that EVERYBODY over 50 should take statins independent of family history of stroke or heart attack. For men it is compelling, but not for women.
More people die of a heart attack with NORMAL cholesterols than those with a high cholesterol........so there is more to heart attacks than just a raised cholesterol.
The side effects of statins in my opinion is EXAGGERATED.
Providing that you have not got a family history of heart disease or strokes and that you were MY wife.....I would NOT be happy for you to be put on statins.
Just my opinion Den.

I thought my Triglycerides were good - on the blood test result they were not highlighted and looked to be in the normal range - I looked up Triglycerides on google and its to do with fat being transported around the blood stream.
I thought my HDL was rubbish ! well according to the test results.
No heart disease in family, apart from my Mum who died last year aged 82 with heart attack but she always had high cholesterol and was on statins which controlled it, which as you know I think they caused her dementia !
My Dad is 83 and has low cholesterol, despite him eating all the wrong stuff.
As I said, I do think mine is weight related, and when I feel better I will start some serious exercise, but at the moment I have a bad throat and feel absolute rubbish.
