I have been told that there is a treatment that injects a fluid into a worn knee to replace the body's natural synovial (?) fluid and the injections are at roughly six monthly intervals. Is this true ? If so, what is the treatment called and is it available on the NHS ?

I'm not sqad but it's called viscosupplementation .They inject hyaluronic acid into the knee .I don't think you get get it on the NHS or I would have been first in the queue :)
You may be able to get it privately .

I can add nothing to the answer that shaney star has given........exept to say that the long term effects have not been made clear.

No, I do not think that it is available on the NHS OR being performed in the UK.

Sounds very interesting - hope they bring it to the UK and on the NHS, as so many people suffer with their knees.
