A question for the docs. Can a heart diagnosed with atrial fibrillation as long as 12 years ago, 'correct' itself?

Your question is, can the irregular heart rate ever get back to normal rhythm in the case of Atrial fibrillation?

The answer is YES and NO.

It depends entirely on the cause.

1)AF can be due to a damaged or "strugggling heart" in which case it is permanent despite treatment OR

2)AF can be caused by a temporary or external cause.

Examples of 1) the permanent type are high BP, atherosclerosis, overactive thyroid, asthma, COPD and many , many others.

Examples of 2) include drinking excess coffee, taking illegal drugs.smoking and many many others.

Sorry about the inconclusive answer.............but there you go!!!

I'm not a doc but have experienced this first hand. I had an episode of atrial fibrillation about 10 years ago. I was hospitalised and had all the tests-a cause was never found. It has never returned.

I don't know what the cause is/was but I don't have any of the causes mentioned in group (1) Sqad although, of course it could be something you've not listed.
I've only drunk decaf coffee for years and don't drink much tea so who know?
It's just that up until about 10 months ago I still had occasional palpitations even when I was on medication but not had any since then.
I'll have to see how it goes.
