Just took my 7 yr old to the dentist. He has great strong teeth, but a prominent underbite. The dentist has said he needs referring to an orthodontist who will prob advise braces. The dentist is gong to apply a filling to the front of each top front teeth, which apparently (he doesn't know how though?!) can help to bring the teeth forward. Has anyone else had any of this before with their kids.. Or had a kid with braces before..? Thanks in advance

My daughter had much the same problem, she was referred to Edinburgh Dental hospital as a teenager - she had to have a couple of teeth removed and braces fitted to help bring the jaw forward. She was fine about having the braces. Did they mention the possibility that your son might need surgery to correct things when he's much older? As sometimes the braces aren't as effective, and surgery might be the only way to correct the underbite - so we were told anyway. Braces might not be fitted until your son has all his adult teeth so there's a lot of time hopefully before you will have to make any decisions. Have you found out how he feels about this?
Are you sure you're not talking about overbite surgery nungate? Both of my daughters were advised to have the operation where the jaw has to be broken and moved forward. I'm not sure they can do the same thing for an underbite.
overbite is top teeth isn't it? Underbite, the bottom?
My daughter has an overbite which will be corrected with braces and no surgery
Underbites are sometimes surgically treated

My lo bottom teeth are infront of the top. The dentist said it needs fixing ASAP as its much harder to fix when he is older. He is being refered now, but the waiting list is quite long!! Just wondered what sort of thing they would do, and what mind of brace he could be expected to have for this. He is really excited about it all !! ESP as none of his friends have had a brace!! Just hope he keeps smiling once he has it.. No pun intended!!
My daughter had this, she started wearing a removable brace at about ten, this covered her top and bottom teeth and was supposed to push the bottom jaw forward during a growth spurt. She then went on to have train track braces fitted at thirteen, she wore these for five years before having corrective surgery at eighteen. There was a huge difference after all the work was finished, she looked so different, but she herself was hugely pleased with the end result.
You should go to an orthodontist who are expert in braces and what would be better for your child. If he's to undergo surgery or braces would be able to fix it. Be sure to come to the most reliable orthodontist in you area for good advice and won't be a mistake when he grows up. My cousin had a consultation with this clinic http://www.dentalpartnersofbrookline.com/ to have her teeth whitened and the end result was really different from the before.
