Thrush

my brother who is very ill is suffering very badly with thrush in his mouth,what can he take to relieve it,i told him to eat some yoghurt and he might get some relief,it has been very bad for about 5 days,sis-in-law says she might phone in the doc. tomorrow for a home visit.

Why not go to the chemist and get thrush treatment?

she phoned me this morning and said she bought something out of the chemist but its not working,dont know what it was though

I imagine your GP will prescribe Nyastin, this is a treatment for oral thrush.

With what? This could be important in suggesting medication.

I think Corsodyl Mouthwash helps but as Sqad says Your Brother may not be able to use it.

I agree about the Nystatin, it's not pills it's a suspension that you squirt into your mouth with a dropper, very soothing.

my brother has myelofibrosis squad,and is getting blood every 2/3 weeks plus a lot of other things,

Thanks....then it may well be difficult to treat and the fungus may well be not affected by the commoner anti fungals.

Amphotericin B is the drug of choice.....can be given as a lozenge to suck with the trade name of Fungilin.......you need to see your doctor for this.

thanks squad,we are trying our hardest to keep him comfortable,he is such a poor soul now,going downhill very fast

If your brother has myelofibrosis, it is possible local treatment with Nystatin may not be sufficient - he may need oral treatment - tablets - as well. Your sister-in-law should ring her GP, or the hospital haematology department, if he is being treated there, for advice.

unfortunately we only have a wee cottage hospital on the island,all his treatment is on the mainland,i am phoning her this evening as she said she would phone the doctor to come out and see him,he goes back into hospital next week for 3 units blood so i will tell her to mention it to them as well.
