I am still having fairly regular periods (I'm 55) the last one being 2 weeks ago then this morning I had that familiar dull achey pain and this lunchtime started bleeding again its only light but even so I thought periods started fading away nearing the menopause not having them more often, does this sound normal?

I am still clutching onto my 40s but my periods started going 'weird' about 5 years ago (maybe longer). I was bleeding regularly and very heavily - I could feel the blood moving.

I think that I have had two periods in the last six months - both of which were very heavy.

I think that everyone is different.
As wolf said everyone is different. A friend of mine had periods every two weeks before they finally happened less frequently and then stopped.
about 1 in 20 women have their menopause at 55 and over so you are not alone. The fact that you have had one within 2 weeks of the last probably means that you are becoming irregular and in the menopause. I was still getting one every few months at 55 when I had to have a total hysterectomy and they stopped.
Get your Dr to do a blood test and that will give him a better idea of what is going on.
Being a good 20 years older than you so well through the menopause fruitsalad I think its not unusual to bleed extra time as you are experiencing.

I had a Hysterectomy at 55 as the bleeding was beyond a joke every other week or so. It was very tiring.

If you have too many problems its worth speaking to your GP.
This (obviously!) isn't my specialist area but the NHS website suggests that what you describe isn't particularly unusual:

It is Mittelschmertz..............Google it........no big deal.....you are just ovulating.
Do you bleed with ovulation pain though? Sounds like normal period pain to me.
237SJ.......yes......it is not uncommon to have a small bleed.
I used to :-(
