Eczema In The Elderly
7 Answers
I am carer for my mum aged 81, who has developed really bad eczema in the last year or so. Its so bad, she looks like a burns victim and its affecting her confidence. She is very badly lame anyway, but has stopped going out altogether as she feels so ashamed of the way she looks
I can't find any info on eczema in the elderly. Tried the Eczema society, but you have to be a health proffessional to read there fact sheets. We are waiting for an appointment at the hosp, to see a dermatologist. Its very frustrating not to be able to get any info. Its hard to get people to take it seriously, (maybe because of her age?) But I know she is in alot of pain and discomfort. Any advice gratefully received.

In the meantime I wish her well and hope she gets somethng to relieve the pain soon
I would try steroid cream first. Hydrocortisone can be bought over counter, although she may need something stronger. Has she been prescribed anything while she's waiting for dermatologist? Does she have any lactose or food intolerance that you know of? Also, aqueous cream instead of soap and lots of E45, or similar emollient.
