Both are painful but the tube is by far the worst. If it is a small pneumothorax they may leave it to resolve on it's own with a check up x-ray in a week's time.
Fluid mean pleural effusion, not pneumothorax, although both usually involve collapsed lungs.

Thankyou sqad and Duffy,
The latest. The hospital took another xray and it appeared slightly better but they said there was hardly anything that draw off with the needle. So she has to go into hospital again on monday if she is still having pain and they will take more xrays and do a tube drain...Being as she hasnt had an accident or a chest infection it looks like the liquid is leaking from a small hole in her lung? caused through lung disease ....would that make sense.? Thankyou again Brenda x

It sounds like she may have bullous emphysema, 'bullous' refers to 'bullae' which are basically big blisters on the surface of the lung, these can burst causing a collapsed lung due to air or fluid leaking from the lung.
I know a fair bit about the condition because I also have it, I have suffered two major pneumothorax, one was a complete collapse. I had surgery called a bullectomy to remove the bullae and a pleurectomy to stick my lung to my chest wall to prevent further collapses.

lilac.....as Daffy has said it could have been a ruptured bullous, but these are usually associated with underlying lung disease e.g emphysema although uncommonly, very uncommonly may appear out "of the blue"
I do not think that we have come to the end of this saga and still think that bronchoscopy (camera) may well be the next step.
Thanks for your continuing feedback.
