I have had type 2 diabetes for approx. 5-6 yrs with very little probs i take tablets twice daily, I have never been told or advised by my diabetic nurse to test my blood daily if at all, just encountered a problem with my driving licence as it is renewed every 3 yrs due to epilepsy since then dvla are requesting a medical report regarding my blood testing ??? until now around 10 weeks has gone by with no news. I not sure if you now have to notify dvla i have looked on web site but others I know with diabetes drive and have not notified dvla. does any body have the same problem as me?

You only need to notify them if or when you are put on insulin
I have type 2 diabetes and have no problems requiring me to take another driving test.
Noe-schitt is quite correct,DVLA only need be notified if you have type 1 diabetes,I have type 2 and looked into it.It must be connected to your epilepsy.

thank you razza,i should have added they requested I visit my doctor for a medical and it was only to confirm about my diabetes 10 min job cannot why they wasted my time or the doctors plus his fee.
You have to notify DVLA if you use insulin - that applies to both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Does insulin immediately make you think of type 1 diabetes? Think again. Between 30 and 40 percent of people with type 2 diabetes take insulin.

Must be Epilepsy related, I've been Type 2 for 4½ - 5 years now, Diet Controlled, No Meds at all, driving has never been mentioned.
I was advised to tell my insurance company about having type 2 diabetes because one of my first problems before I was on insulin was diabetic retinopathy - the insurance said that was all ok, no premium increase, but if you start having eye problems the DVLA will only issue your licence for a year, then when the condition is stable, they lengthen the time of renewal - I'm on ten years now before I have to renew again.
Dear lilly1,
Regarding epilepsy, the comon "petit mal" form is "easily" controlled by drugs, and I doubt if the DVLA would be over-concerned about your driving.
"Grand mal" is a different matter but it doesn't sound as though you are in that bracket and there may well be good treatments - I dunno.
As regards your Type 2 diabetes I don't see any problems as you are not on intravenous insulin and do not have problems reading a car number-plate from the standard distance. Actually, one of our neighbours, we were told, is a Type 1 diabetic and is dependent on insulin but has just qualified as a nurse and drives to work daily. All very confusing and I sympathise with you.
You have rightly been honest with the DVLA and I do not understand the delay. In fact your honesty should help you back into the driving-seat because if you thought that you were a danger to yourself or others then, like most of us, I am sure you would make the decision to quit driving yourself.
Oh: why a nurse's views rather than your GP? and are you sure your three year "self-certification" is targeted at your particular health problems". Dare I say it (O.K. I will) If you are 70 yrs or over, the process applies to all of us.
Luv,
SIQ.
You can say Yes, Most of the people driving, but few of the people don't drive so because low blood pressure. You can get driving Licenses, they don't check health, personality as well as you need to care your health check here http://www.kuberaksha.com for control you diabetes.
