I had a polyp that needed a camera to investigate, so the camera didn't need to go down that far. I had a spray beforehand and they put the camera up my nose (the ear, nose and throat are all connected).
It wasn't what I'd call uncomfortable .... just a kind of weird sensation is the best way I can explain it .....

I just had the spray; I hated it and told the doctor to pull it back out again before he was done. He wasn't best pleased (though if the clot had told me he only had five seconds to go I could probably have hung on; but he didn't, until afterwards). I'd never do that again; take the sedative if it's offered.
I've had it done a couple of times, both with the throat spray, not sedation, so this is just my experience. The throat spray tasted like banana at first and then tasted kind of bitter, it makes your throat feel numb and when they put the camera in it made me gag, but it's not so bad if you just breathe when they tell you to. It doesn't take very long, but it's not very pleasant. It helps that the staff at the hospital I go to are wonderful, very friendly and they try to make everyone feel at ease (plus they always provide biscuits afterwards). Good luck!
