When people say "snap out of it"...

Please dont ever say that to someone who is depressed!

Same as you cant SNAP out of diabetes... Its an illness.

I was of the old "pull yourself together" brigade until I heard someone on the radio once say "would you say that to a cancer victim" No I wouldn't say it again

Must be upsetting. Don't forget as well that when you're suffering with depression you're not allowed to laugh or go out otherwise people think you're faking it!! xx
........or when people say, 'What have you got to be depressed about?'

Another grr!
You can be absolutely sure that someone telling you that has never been there - lucky them.

Don't let it get to you.

How are things going? I am beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. Rather let down by mental health services. Cannot understand that with all the different therapies there are they only offer CBT.

And what about IF you have done everything possible so far DB? X
There isn't the same stigma attached anymore, thankfully, so most people do deal with it the best way they can. First port of call being the GP.

Whats next then Gav? You feeling OK though?

I had a fab weekend to a point then it went downhill and i havent really bounced back yet!

This scenario came from my not sounding "chirpy" enough on the phone lol- people reallllly try to over analyse sometimes and then i had to suffer a massive speech.... Yawn! X
Coming on here and thrashing it out isn't moaning , we have all encouraged anyone who needs to that they should do so.

I recall that when I was in the depths of it, my face hurt with the constantly pasted on smile that I forced - so determined that no one would know.

Gav best of luck with ever increasing improvement too.

Hello Tinks,
I have found a therapist that isn't going to let me off the hook. I have done the "it wasn't fair" bit of talking therapy. The last time I saw him he started using some gentle provocative therapy which I kind of respected as had a lot of "therapy" with well meaning people but who for me were ineffective. Most therapists I have seen have been happy to allow me to just talk which I can do very well but have never really got down to the root issues.
From what I am beginning to understand is I didn't in the past do 'emotions'. I sort of got through life watching everyone else living but have never opened myself up to success or failure, I was comfortably numb to life.
The funniest thing is if you worked beside me you would of never known what was going on in my head. I was very organised, my work was praised by the CQC, there was a complicated procedure (NG Tube) that was needed to be replaced on a client that few people felt confident to do which I undertook and if the client went into hospital they would phone me to replace it.
So what is next....
Well for me it is life to grab it by the balls and treat success and failure equally, I have never taken many risks as always being scared of failing!
There are a lot of therapies out there it maybe just (JUST!!!!) finding the right one for you!
Much love as always!!!
Mental Health Services are in my experience totally inadequate!
CBT was a complete waste of my time the therapist I saw used techniques that you could of taught a 10 year old.
Our local mental health trust has been put into special measures by the CQC.
I have never really contacted my GP about my issues until last year. She was nice but had no real experience in mental health. So with 1 in 4 people suffering mental health issues I thought there might be one of the GP's or Nurses that I could be referred to too discuss my issues and then device a treatment plan but no such person existed. Was referred to Well Being Service and had to wait 2 months to be told that I had suffered the wrong type of trauma!!!!
My Employment and Support Allowance was stopped on the support of a half hour interview by a Physiotherapist!!!!
So if you think it is as simple as going to your GP and taking a few tablets it is definitely NOT!!!!

But don't, stick with it - you'll get there.
