Personally, I find that avoiding the germ riddled friend until their cold has passed means you get rid of the problem of having a friend who's speech is slowed down by phlem!

Wow-how much of the stuff is he producing?
I suggest you give him a straw so he can sip continually, therefore washing down that phlem problem he has!
