I know that I should eat a maximum of 6g of salt per day........but what is the minimum amount that our body needs? eg. Is a regime containing 3.5g salt per day ok? Cheers - Carlos

I seem to remember hearing that the body actually only 'needs' 2g and can make do with less, the RDA of 6g was emphasised so much because people were eating so much salt that putting 2g as the RDA would seem impossible and people wouldn't even try to change their habits! So in answer to your question, as far as I am aware, 3.5g should be plenty!
Whatever the recommended amount is it can generally obtained without any special consideration. Most people already have more salt that they need in their diet, it should never be necessary to add salt.
hi,
loosehead is right anyone with a varied diet, wil ingest
enough salt, without adding any salt to your food.
Hiya - just thought i would say be careful - not enough salt can be very dangerous, a member of family was hospilised for 2 months and nearly died as their salt level was to low.
Hello Carlos I gave up adding any extra salt to my diet over 25 years ago and this was after covering my food every meal time with a good addition of salt. I have had no adverse effects and my doctor always compliments me on my blood pressure and general good health. I always feel very thirsty and unwell after eating out because of the salt content in most meals so I think my body knows best and I take note of what it is telling me. However just occasionally I feel the need for a packet of salt and vinegar crisps, the saltiest thing I know and always eat them as that is also my body telling me it needs some salt. Try cutting down a bit at a time if you are worried about salt in your diet. One of the benefits apart from the health issue is that food really does taste so good without it. Enjoy!
