I have been prescribed this medication (again) due to problems with my blood sugar levels, too many hypoglycaemic attacks - horrible things.

This time it seems to be irritating my stomach and eating it with a meal or after a meal seems to make little difference.

If anyone has had this problem can they tell me if it will settle. I have only been on it this time for ten days.

I can't remember having this problem last time that I took it.

Gastro-intestinal side effects are unfortunately quite common with this medication, I really would go back to your Dr he may reduce the dosage or take you off it and try something else.Hope you feel better soon.
I've been on this for two or three years with no real problems. However, at a check up last week my doctor asked me if I was experiencing any side effects as if I was there was a slow release version available which was supposed to reduce them.

I might go and visit the doctor.

Thanks.
Are you taking any other medications alongside metformin? If so, it maybe possible that it may interact with another drug in the stomach, resulting in your discomfort.

Other verisons of metformin are available which you may be better suited to.

I'm assuming that you have been referred to a Diabetologist, who is determining the right medication and dosage for you. If not, ask your GP to be referred. Sometimes GP's don't really know how to find the best and most suitable medication.

GeordiePengy... It isn't a simple tale to tell. I suffer from polycystic ovaries and this causes excess insulin but the insulin receptors are not picking it up.

It means that I am prone to hypos and am actually pre-diabetic. The Metformin was prescribed by a gynaecologist. I am 18 stone and although I have already lost 4 stone I need to lose more.

The hypos are horrible and upset me.

I am going to analyse my diet and try and improve it.

Thanks all.
