Bloodshot eyes

For the past few days both my eyes have been extremely bloodshot. They're not sore or anything but make me look really awful!
I have been getting plenty of sleep, drinking lots of water, anything I thought would help but nothing has changed! I have tried using eyedrops in vain, they never end up in my eye!
Can anybody advise anything that might help? And possible causes of this? If it helps, I am 17, have not been drinking recently, smoke occasionally, and take daily hayfever/allergy tablets.
