In this case it is different to the way other anti-smoking agents work, such as nicotine gum and patches, since these simply supply an alternative source of nicotine other than cigarettes. Zyban works at the neurological level, reducing the craving for nicotine in any form.
puddicat my husband has been trying to stop smoking for several weeks now since the death of his mum ( it was her dying wish that he stop) he simply cannot do it on will power alone he has tried. He has also tried every form of NRT and nothing has worked for him, the nose spray burns, patches don't stick properly and last etc etc. The zyban is a last resort so we are both hoping it will work for him so I could really do with constructive advice not your personal criticism
Hi tigwig. I used Zyban to stop. It's better by far than patches etc as it does away with the nicotine craving, leaving only the habit of reaching for a cigarette to overcome. There can be some side effects to watch for. (in my case, weird dreams and hand tremors) but these soon clear up. Good luck to your man.
Tigwig - I tried Zyban, but it gave me bad dreams and kept me awake for most of the time, so I wrote to the drugs company and told them. I received a very nice letter from one of the scientists directly involved in the making of these things, which resulted in a direct phone call from this person. They were pleased to note the side effects. I finally joined New Leaf. It was suggested that everytime I felt the urge, I should sip from a bottle of still water. The peak of "need" lasts no longer than 20-30 seconds. This worked. After a week, not smoking didn't bother me. Two year's on - it's still fine.
