A friend is thinking of having this done due to bloating.
Has anyone had it and did it work and does it hurt?!
Many thanks.

There are risks if she does it too often as not only does the bad bacteria leave, the good goes as well, so it may be beneficial to consume yoghurt or Yakult afterwards to help. Irrigation can be done at home as well through many means. Many people purchase from the chemist toss-away phosphate or oil based enemas. The most popular is the Fleet brand. The second is Fletchers - both are fine, however the Fleet brand is slightly better. I would recommend the phosphate ones over the oil based, especially where bloating is concerned. Your friend should have no concerns and in fact may be surprised at how much better and more 'alive' she feels afterwards.

Dont do it
Why stick a tube up your 4rse and squirt warm water into your rectum?
You will be removing healthy bacteria which is there for a reason and replacing them with God only knows what!!
The anus is only an exit orafice, designed for the explusion of solids and gas, Not for inserting foregin bodies:

Potential Dangers
Colonic irrigation can potentially cause severe adverse effects and must be carefully administered. People receiving frequent treatments may absorb too much water, leading to electrolyte imbalances in the blood, nausea, vomiting, heart failure, fluid in the lungs, abnormal heart rhythms or coma. Infections have been reported, possibly because of contaminated equipment or as a result of clearing out normal colon bacteria. There is a risk of bowel perforation (breakage of the bowel wall), which is a severe complication. Deaths have been reported.

Here's an article from the Guardian which you may find offers a balanced view on the subject. Because we fill our bodies with so many chemicals these days, especially in form of the 'E' additives, some of those items do indeed become caked within the colon. I don't disagree with 4Gs, if your friend did this too often. However, there are known benefits for some conditions. It's interesting to note that in some countries, should you be entered into hospital, an enema is a standard part of the admissions process.
Our British comfort zones are not always willing to discuss these issues openly...and it's not helped by media freaks such as our 'famous' (infamous?) Poo Doctor! Remember her?

I was about to write that I hope everything comes out ok, but the irony caught me! So..instead...bottoms up!

An enema is a different kettle of fish to colonic irrigation - totally different.
Enemas are good for very difficult constipation, as a last resort.
Colonic irrigation pushes a lot more water much further up.
In a hundred years time people will be laughing at the fact that some people actually paid to have colonic irrigation 'in the old days'.
Improve your diet, exercise more.

I had it done once and certainly felt much better after it. I am no expert but dont think the odd visit would cause any damage. They do say that you should not go to often though. I did not find it painful - more worrying that I was going to, how shall we say, explode in the womans face but now that I have been I would not worry going again. It is kinda like the flush of the water and you fill up till it rushes back out, just down the tube. Something else must be causing your friends bloating and that will not solve it but I do intend to do it again - perhaps annually as feel that cannot do any harm to get a good flush out.
