I had an accident last saturday evening which involved me bending my ankle sideways when I missed a footpath and stepped on the edge of it. At the time, after some choice words, I was able to get up and drive home. The next day I couldn't even stand on it. I can move on it now but after a while it feels very sore like some one kicked it. It had gone a lovely colour but this has died away but it still looks very swollen. How long does this type of sprain take to disapate and is there any chance of there being something else wrong. I have done this sort of thing before but it has usually cleared up in a day or so. Thanks for your time.
As a postie going down many uneven paths, I've done my ankles loads of times. It's just a very bad sprain that's all - by the middle of next week you should be back to normal. In the meantime, a bag of frozen peas won't do any harm.
It could be worth going to your Doctors. A few years ago I twisted my ankle stepping off a kerb. At first I thought it was a sprained ankle but when I still couldn't walk properly after a couple of weeks I went to the Doctors who found I'd actually torn the ligaments in the top of my foot (aswell as spraining my ankle) and recommended I sit with my foot up for 6 weeks!
