Steps v distance

I keep hearing about the number of steps we need to take, but what sort of distance are we talking about please? I guess it's different for a man or woman.

When I use my pedometre,I find that 3,000 steps equals aprox 1 1/4 miles......so 10,000 is about 4+ miles. I am female with a 24" stride
The amount of "steps" can be misleading, as strides differ from person to person. I think a 4-5 miles walk a day is enough to keep you healthy - or make you collapse!
