I am going tomorrow morning to have a mould made for a hearing aid, I am really worried that hearing aids still 'whistle' when there is interference. I work in a very busy school office and answer phones all day and am worried about this happening. Do they still 'whistle'? Do the NHS give digital hearing aids or are they still the old style analogue ones?

The NHS do give digital aids and there is very little whistling, if any.

They will put your mind at rest tomorrow - write a list of questions.
My dads just had a digital one fitted last week and its the best thing since sliced bread, he can hear the birds sing and he even went searching for the water leak he thought he could hear, it turned out to be the water fall in the pond, he says its brilliant.
As Ethel says, most NHS authorities give out digital hearing aids these days.... none of which *whistle*.... You may find everything a bit *loud* at first when wearing your new hearing aid, but you will soon get used to the (normal) sound !

You may also find it helpful to hold your office phone in a slightly higher position when answering the phone, as the hearing aid is positioned behind your ear, the phone receiver needs to be picking up the sound at that point, not in the middle of your ear.

Expect a wait of a few weeks whilst your mould is made btw and ask them to show you how to change the tubes - the secret is to cut the tubes on a diagonal and slide them through the hole, or just post another Q here...

Good luck Louise !

Thanks for your answers! I was fitted with a siemens digital bte hearing aid and it is fantastic! Still getting used to it at the min and I cannot believe just how deaf I am - the sounds I hear now are so clear and loud (normal to everyone else!) I can even hear when my kids are walking round upstairs and I have never heard that. I hear the dogs footsteps too. I never knew reading a book was so noisy when I turn the pages! I feel like I have been given a new lease of life x
