I am seriously considering this, we're absolutely 100% sure we don't want any more children but would find any experiences anyone has had, good or bad helpful. Thankyou

Go for it, dont be put off by others saying it should be his job! minedidnt want do it needles to say i did so easy, i am divorced from him now lol!!!
Depending on your age, the NHS will not do it for free. I have never wanted children and have tried on several occasions to get myself sterilised but they have told me that I can not have it done on the NHS until I am 40 as I have not got any children already. So I have had a coil implanted instead and have never looked back.
The female sterilisation operation is much more difficult than the male one,it also takes longer to recover and requires longer off work afterwards. After I had my son almost 11 years ago my fiance had a vasectomy and was back at work 2 days later,he was bruised and sore but recovered very quickly. You do have to use contraception for a while though after a vasectomy as there may still be live sperm in the tubes.
If you have problem periods, be aware that sterilisation can make your periods much heavier, and last longer.
I don't know for sure but I've heard that sterilisation is alot easier now than it used to be and can be done by keyhole surgery as a daycase. (don't really know what this means I read it in a magazine!)
It does depend on age. I was 28 when I had it done. I had 4 children but by the third I was sure I didn't want any more but the DR said I was to young and wouldn't be considered. I was 23 then.
I had 3 very close together.
I had my forth child and I was glad I didn't have done. But if your sure then go for it.

Thanks folks, I appreciate your help. I'm 44, have just the one son but hes 21 now and I really dont want to start again. Ethel youve read my mind a bit, the impact on my periods is the only issue causing me doubts now really. I started the pill in my teens simply because I had very heavy painful periods and it later proved to be the most suitable contraception for us. I've had problem free painless periods for many years then hardly anything at all following the change to the mini pill 5 years ago.
I guess I need to think a bit more, thanks so much.
Well, here's one for you. I had keyhole surgery (daycase).Very straight forward...However, 3 years later experienced abdominal discomfort. Had various scans, nothing conclusive so all the docs said it had to be endometriosis.Went to have the op & low & behold it wasn't what they thought at all! They found 3 (yes 3!) clips that were used for my sterilisation. One embedded on my bladder & one clipping the fat from my bowel to the top of my vagina (they called it 'pouch of Douglas') The other clip was still attached to the fallopian tube. They didnt remove them there & then as I hadn't signed the consent form for that procedure!! Had them removed 6 months later. I know my case is VERY rare. Having said all that, I dont regret having it done. If anything, my periods are better than they were before. I was 27 with 2 young kids (3 & 4) & I had it done on the NHS. This was 10 years ago. Good luck!
i had mine done on the nhs when i was 28 and i have no kids! i was in for a day and had the week off work afterwards, the only thing that i've noticed is my periods are more painful

People I know have increased their weight since the op

Hi
I was slightly different in that I was sterilised while having my 3rd baby by caesarean. I was 34 at the time and my consultant sort of recommended it as it was also my 3rd caesarean. I read up on it and found out that if clips were used on the tubes then there was a chance they could come off at some point(as ilovetolove has pointed out), so my consultant assured me that my tubes would actually be cut. Obviously I was recovering from the c-section so I don't know if the sterilisation would've hurt etc. But, as a few people have mentioned, my periods got very heavy, very painful and lasted longer. Because of this I'm now on the pill lol.
I got sterilised whilst having my 2nd child by c-section, so again I can't vouch for the pain as I was recovering from the 'birth'. I had signed the consent forms (29 years old at the time) but me & Mr jd had decided we had only wanted the 2 & we stuck to our guns - I was adamant & insisted.
The amusing thing (looking back now) was that when the c-section was done the surgeon was going to put me back together MINUS the sterilisation! she hadn't realised I was supposed to be having it done!
So I'm laying there waiting & then I looked at her & said "I'm supposed to be getting sterilised at the same time" - she didn't believe me!!! I said I've already signed the consent form.
Thank god I was awake for the procedure otherwise I would've thought everything had gone to plan until I found myself pregnant with a 3rd!!!
My periods are heavier - 2 days & then lighter for the next 3 days but it was the best decision we made.

good luck x

Aww thanks folks for all your experiences, found them so interesting and really helpful. Seems to be like a lottery out there! Haven't been put off the op, just still a little unsure about suffering weight gain (can't afford that) or bad periods as a result. Will contemplate a little longer, I appreciate your support.
I was sterilised at the age of 25, the op was 6 months after my second child was born, I spent one night in hospital and came home to a 2 year old toddler and a 6 month old baby and I was fine. No time in bed to recover as it was not necessary. the surgery was keyhole, two tiny cuts, one above the pubic line and one in my belly button. No weight gain, periods were no worse than before. My tubes were cut and tied so no clips. this all happened 25 years ago and I am sure they must have improved things in that time. I have never regretted the op or the decision to have it and I have not had any health problems because of it.
