A couple of weeks ago I developed a sore red patch on my back (like ezcema). I have steadily got more small patches (dry and itchy) over the rest of my back, front and a few on my arms and legs. I look like I have got chicken pox (it isn't). I have tried various creams and nothing has helped. If it's not ezcema, what else could it be?

Sounds a little bit like Psoriasis
Is it itchy or just sore?

Could be something like this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pityriasis_Rosea

from here...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rash
I once deveoped a terrible itch between ny shoulder blades, that got very sore from me scratching it. Then patches appeared elsewhere. Tests showed that I'd developed an allergy to metal, and the catches on my bra straps'd set it off. Betnovate N eased the problem very quickly, but I have to coat any metal that might come into contact with my skin - such as on the s/steel back of a watch, zips on jeans, etc.
It could also be Ringworm. If it is, then it's contagious.
Evens...........Pityriasis rosea
2-1................Psoriasis
3-1.................Discoid eczema
250-1...........Ringworm
