A few years ago, I suffered from a bout of severe back pain. I was prescribed some pain killers called Co-proxamol(or somethng like that). They worked wonders. I am told that this drug is now unavailable. Is this true? If so, what is the prescribed alternative now. Thanks

No, they don't do them anymore.

Think the new version is codydramol, that's what they give me anyway though don't find them as good as the co-proxamol.

They may also consider something like normal NSAIDS like ibuprofen or diclofenac (it's what you get in painkilling gels like Voltarol).
Cocodamol may be a suitable alternative for your back pain.

Talk to your GP
I read that co-promoxal was found to be very addictive thats why they're not prescribed anymore.
Co-proxamol is no longer used because of the risk of overdose from quite a small dosage(whether deliberate or accidental).
I know someone who once took 40 of them with half a bottle of whisky to try and kill herself and all it did was make her throw up, so I have no idea how they collected the evidence to prove this.
My doctor advises either co-codamol or plain paracetamol instead for patients that were previously prescribed co-proxamol.
My GP gives me Etodolac 600mg which is a strong painkiller.
