Hi I have dentist phobia but need a lot of work done on my teeth. Does anyone know of anywhere in Herts, or North London where I could go to have fillings & crowns done under general anaesthetic?
Thank you.

maybe . . . do i have to get referred by my own dentist to do that? :-/
I have answered this type of question too many times to remember so I'll keep my usual rant as short as I can.

If you have a real phobia then the most appropriate method of anxiolysis would be consciouss sedation, your dentist would be able to refer you to an appropriate practice/clinician.
its very unlikely you would get general anaesthetic for routine dental work (perhaps if you needed jaw surgery then yes)
however as mrxla has indicated you can get sedation at some clinics, but probably not o nthe NHS (althought the sedation clinic in the town where i live gives those people who recieve free nhs treatment sedation fr free)

look in the phone book, or ask you dentist where your nearest one is
You will struggle to find (although I believe it is possible in a few locations) to find the following:

- a consultant anaethetist who is happy to provide life threatening GA's for elective dentistry
- a restorative dentist who is skilled enough to carry out multiple, multi quadrant dentistry including preparation for extra-coronal restorations in one visit, and who is at the same time dense enough to believe that it will be possible to take 'dental' impressions for said crowns while you have an endotracheal tube in place

- do you expect to have another GA 1-2 weeks later for the 'crown fit' and what if they require adjustment, are they gonna 'slot' you back on the GA list
- Obviously you haven't thought this one through, sometimes 'special care' restorative work is carried out if absolutely necessary under GA but thats about it.

- presumably you are very, very, very, very, very rich if you presume to be able to afford a consultant anaethetist, a theatre team, worlds most dense and most brilliant restorative dentist on several occasions and obviously have achieved so much that you intend to risk your life for the process

you're in my neck of the woods.. if you want me to come and hold your hand give me a shout :o)

go and get it over with. the problems won't go away x
i thought you were keeping the rant short mrxla?
got carried away sorry

Try mind over matter.

While having treatment pinch your your leg the brain concentrates on the leg pinch - which you control and you wont feel any pain.

Most appointments are only half hour at a time - in 30mins you will be out of the dentists.
