Do you mean clinic vertigo (feeling of rotation)? This can be caused by a number of conditions.

How long has she had it for and is it constant or on and off, if the latter in what kind of ratio?

Has she been seen by a doctor and has there been any cause found or diagnosis or tests done or medication given? Has she ever seen a specialist such as in ENT or neurology?

There are medications which can help with vertigo and associated problems such as nausea and vomiting. These should be on prescription though after proper assessment by a doctor especially if things are getting worse.

Does she have any other symptoms?
I take Stemetil on prescription which does the trick. If you ask your doc he could refer you to a specialist. You would need to lie down and he/she would gently tilt your head from side to side then back and forth. Vertigo is also known as Labyrinthitiis. If you can imagine a tiny ball inside the ear moving out of place, that causes vertigo and the manouvering by the specialist puts the ball back.
I have phases of vertigo, it's awful and like chinadog I take stemetil. I've realised that stress/anxiety makes it far worse, has your mum been worried about anything lately?...I know mums are always worried, but more than is usual? Extremes of temperature & air pressure changes also affect me but there's nothing anyone can do about that.
Sorry I'm not being much help, as the others have said her GP will hopefully invesigate.... hope your mum's problem settles down again soon.

thanks for your replies i'll pass them on.she has seen a doctor but would always like to avoid going on pills if poss, thanks again
Has she had a hearing problem too?.. if so and if youve never seen a GP do it!!
It would be wise for her to check as it can be the sign of a number of conditions.

I have stemetil as well and also have behatistines and a nasal spray as have vertigo with meniere's disease. I take a maintenance dose daily and more when it's bad.

The drugs really do make a difference.

I found some meditation and qui gong (sp?) techniques helpful, learning to ground yourself and focus when I feel and attack coming on.

It depends on what is causing it as to what could help so finding that out can go a long way.
