Excema cure

I've developed a very itchy rash on my calf - I've looked it up on the internet and it seems to resemble excema. It is unsightly and driving me mad. I've put some E45 cream on it, and I also have some betnovate cream which I had for something else, but I'm a bit worried about using steroid creams - I have tried it once or twice but I think it may have made the rash worse. Do you think a pharmasist would be able to help? Thanks for any (sensible) suggestions.

My husband has developed a very severe form of a similar problem. He has seen a consultant and to relieve the itching he prescribed Eurax (available over the counter) to stop the itching and to keep the skin moist he uses a steroid cream.

Do you really think that the people managing NHS Direct have got anything to offer to a man with a skin rash?

blackcat.....I don't blame you for trying certain creams, but a diagnosis has to be established be treatment and in the case of a skin rash, a doctor is your best bet.

Be careful with Betnovate as it can thin your skin - as can alot of the prescription creams for eczema. I get it all over but the only place it's unsightly is just under my eyes where it's very dry and tops me wearing makeup. Luckily I don't get it there too often. The ABSOLUTE best cream I have used - and I cover myself with it daily - is the Boots own brand that sits alongside E45. Try the lotion it's really good and not too expensive. Also, very good for the skin is Urtica tincture. Made from nettles and an acquired taste it's excellent taken regularly. Hope you find relief soon.

I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday and she told me to try Sudocrem - I bought a pot yesterday and put some on when I got home, and also before I went to bed and today the rash is looking much better and not itching nearly as much, so I'm going to carry on using this for the next couple of days and see what happens. Thank you all for your help and advice.
