Chances of living
11 Answers
Everyday I see a new statistic. I now know that if I binge drink I'm 56% more likely to have a stroke, if I smoke I'm almost certain to get cancer, if I don't eat greens I'll get diabetes, if I eat too many saturates I'll die, etc etc.
IF IF IF
Now I'm wondering what are the chances of a completely average man living to a ripe old age without getting any of these things that we get scaremongered with everyday?

There are too many imponderables to answer your question with any degree of certainty. What do you mean by "completely average?" Chris's life expectancy numbers indicate that about half of men will die before they reach that age, but half will live longer. Which half will you fall in?
Family history matters - how old are your parents/grandparents or at what age did they die? Diet and exercise matter but of course tomorrow scientists could find a cure for something that might have killed you otherwise.
The media also do a terrible job of reporting on the slow and messy advance of medical knowledge. Every study is treated as "the truth" even though many findings will be contradicted by the next study that comes along. I'm not disputing that, say, cigarettes are bad for you with that statement, but the media never seem to pass up the chance for a scary headline when the actual conclusion of the study may be more open to interpretation.
.
And after all that you could walk out your door tomorrow and get hit by a bus or a falling meteorite. Save for tomorrow but live for today, I say.

Shaun...you should get an Oscar with a performance like that:
"I now know that if I binge drink I'm 56% more likely to have a stroke."......where did you get that statistic? More chance of having cirrhosis of the liver and oesphageal varices and diseases associated with the drinkers lifestyle.......not an average man of the 21st century......your choice.
"if I smoke I'm almost certain to get cancer, "...not so........you are 60% more likely...........hardly CERTAIN....a non smoker can get cancer of the lung.
"if don't eat greens I'll get diabetes"......not so....
" eat too many saturates I'll die".......correct, we will ALL die, but not necessarily due to LDL.
You have the facts from the medical profession via the media and the choice is yours. Yes, it is frustrating when thew medical profession changes it's mind, but the bottom line is, that if the medical profession is in conflict, then the cause of the disorder is not known.

stop wingeing and get on with life
you can either live a long time ... or just feel like you have.
thing is . the excesses you describe are just that ...
but you forgot sex ... you can do as much as you want ... it's good for you (unless the wife finds out) - and you wouldn't have time for the other stuff - win - win
it's what your right arm's for!
