Myth, it is generally recognised that self monitoring of glucose is nessential and standard for all cases of type 1 diabetes, and for those cases of type 2 diabetes being treated with insulin.
There is, however, an ongoing clinical debate over the value of glucose monitoring for those cases of type 2 diabetes that are being treated by means other than insulin, and then a secondary argument over the value of blood glucose monitoring over urine glucose monitoring as a therapeutic tool.
I would imagine, based on your comments, that you fall into this latter category - type 2 diabetes not treated by insulin, and its also true that there is a postcode lottery over what support is offered to patients.
