I have a skin infection in my ear. Sometimes its just itchy and sometimes painful. Or it can disappear completely. The last time I got it I got antibiotics as I was flying a few days later. I never ended up taking the tablets. Now the infection has come back - can I take these now - any ideas

The tablets are Augmentin
peri, my love, just back from taking HER shopping and breakfast.

I have to be careful not to monopolize B&S but as you haven't had any answers and we are old friends, I feel that I could attend top your problem without causing too much of a furore.

Now:
Does it itch? ( your ear that is)
Any deafness?
Any discharge? (from your ear that is)
Have you had it before?(the ear problems that is)

Hi sqad
Yes

Yes
I have very small ear passages and have always had to be syringed also
peri.....sound very much like otitis externa (Tropical Ear).....Google it.

It is a patch of eczema in the ear canal which from time to time becomes infected and this may cause pain in the ear.

Gentamycin H.C drops should settle it, but not sure whether or not you can get them without a prescription.

Keep me informed eh?
Question Author
That sounds exactly like it thanks sqad. Have had those drops before but they are slow to work - do you think I could take the anti biotics at all - or should I go to doc and have them syringed also. It's really frustrating that it keeps coming back at me - although the deafness thing can be a bonus at times LOL . It is good to see you back and don't be backwards at coming forwards as they say
peri....finish of your Augmentin and take pain killers to ease the pain and that should do the trick. If not, then go back to your GP so he can have a look in your ear, as it may not need syringing.

Gentacin HC always hand to have in the house.
Question Author
Thanks - will do - I will need prescription for them. Appreciate this thanks
I am interested that you advise keeping it in the house, sqad. I didnt think it was supposed to be used that way. But I do make sure I always have Otomize to hand, and tho that is also only available on scrip I always seem to get away with repeat scrips. I doubt if Id be able to do that with Gentamycin H.C.
peri, I too have been a life-long martyr to otitis externa. All those symptoms and more, wecondary infections and all. Otomize seems to keep them at bay if you use it for even less than the prescribed week (?) at the first signs of trouble, and I don't think it's any form of hydrocortisone. Let's see what sqad says about this.
mallam.....otomize?.........good idea...antibiotic+steroid, cannot fault this management of otitis externa in any way at all.
sorry for the hijack peri - sqadlet where have you been? salla has been looking for you
rinkins....was "roughed up" about a week ago on a thread, that plus endless and persistent hassle, necessitated a but of a rest....;-)
Are you staying now? Salla needs some advice 22 October if you are not about before then. Are you ok now? We have missed you
rinkins...thanks my love.....no big deal, just needed to recover from a "duffing up".

Will contact salla on Monday.
Question Author
Hi mallam and rinkins - hijack away no prob - can I get the other drops over the counter sqad?
THanks sqad xx

Sorry peri - I sympathise I know how painful that can be I hope it feels better soon x
peri....don't know....try.

Otomize is as good as Gentacin H.C.........both contain steroids and both contain antibiotics.
Question Author
Thanks sqad - am popping to shops now as have some late birthday shopping to do so will try chemist. Maybe pop on CB for a bit of banter later ? Thanks rinkins - I'll survive this you can't kill a bad thing. Sqad how is kitty?
peri....causing problems at feeding time, but never leaves me alone..........typical female ;-)
Question Author
Sounds like a pet - have to dash to shops now and fore finger on left hand keeps locking which is really uncomfortable - see you later
Hah! So it was the pushy Sammy giving you "endless and persistent hassle". Thought so.

I wondered what your wife had done to deserve capital letters, but now I wonder if it was this kitten of whom you said you had been taking HER shopping and breakfast. You'll really have to put your foot down. It's only a kitten for Gawds sake. Should still be satisfyingly squishable!
