I cut my thumb under the nail

Hi guys,

Basically, I cut my thumb under the nail from squishing shut a tin can pre-recycling. My thumb slipped and must have cut itself under the nail on the rim of the tin. I can't really see the cut but it's really hurting right now! Sounds ridiculous, but it's more painful than a regular cut, probably because it wants to heal below the nail. Has the happened to anyone else before? I'm just after reassurance it will heal under the nail. It's throbbing a little bit at the moment even though it happened hours ago. Have used some antiseptic but not sure what to do! I'm near a pharmacy if there's anything you can recommend?

It will be very painful, so take pain killers e.g Ibuprofen 600mgms.

It should settle by Thurs, but if it starts to swell and become red and more painful, then it is most likely to be infected and you will need antibiotics from your GP.

Tetanus Injection....some would say yes, but I would say No.

Try to hold your hand upright as much as poss, (as opposed to downwards) the bloodflow won't be as fast and will help the throbbing to ease. Aunty Jem.

Thanks for your advice. Luckily the pain reduced after a couple of days. It's a nasty places to have a cut though!
