if somebody said your body was 'solid' would you take it as a compliment or an insult? to me it sounded as though they were describing me as large, (although i'm not)

If you're a bodybuilder, or a bouncer, it's a compliment.
If you're a girlie girl, it's an insult.

insult then
Maybe they just meant that you haven't got any wobbly bits
maybe they meant fit.....
I would take it they meant lean...no fat.
FIT

unless it was said in derogatory manner, depends what the conversation was about.
If they were talking about your dining table I would take it as a compliment fruity but if it was about your body - I would punch them...............
My daughter is what would be known as solid. She is 5ft 8in tall and built like a swimmer, slim hips, broad shoulders, big boobs and quite toned/muscular.
i would think it's a compliment; they meaning you are fit and healthy looking.

why don't you ask them what they meant? tell them you've not heard of that phrase before.
It's up to you whether it's an insult or a compliment, noone else can answer that for you. It also depends on the context.

Built like a Rugby front row forward?
younger son is "solid" and brother, he is and always was. Not fat, he's stronger than he realises.
His older bro built like a thoroughbred and also stronger than he realises.
younger son now appreciates it's not in any way shape or form an insult.
