Ive just seen an episode of Friends in which Monica's boyfriend an Cagefighter loses a fight and is put into a whole upperbody cast including his arms.
Is this really ever done, if so what type of injury would warrant one of these whole body casts?

Fracture and or dislocation of the cervical and or thoracic vertebra.......broken neck.

So they also cast the arms to restrict movement in case of any further injury?

Yes.... possibly until the diagnosis is confirmed by radiography.
