My 13 year old has just started. She's laying on the sofa almost in tears saying her tummy hurts. I haven't got a hot water bottle. I've given her some soluable disprin (she won't take real pills). Can anyone recommend anything else? I've never suffered with this myself so I don't know.

I can't go out and get her anything because I'm at home alone with the children and numpty features has taken the only car I can fit us all in!!!

A fairly hot bath?
Hot bath, distraction with DvD, ownership of TV remote, wireless laptop access so she can moan to friends.
If she won't take painkillers tough on her.
Getting up and about will be the best for her.
She's got a lot of this ahead and if she learns to pull everyone's strings now.....well.

I agree with Mosaic, the worst thing she can do is lay down and do nothing, exercise is great at alleviating these pains....dont wrap her up in cotton wool too much, its a natural thing and oh so many girls moan and moan about these...yawn....get your daughter invovled with something you are doing like cleaning the house up...

The hot bath seems to have found favour, followed by me saying she can have dad's lappy to moan at her friends. Amazingly that seems to have done the trick. Thank you both!

(I am a woman really, I have just never had any issues like this and it kind of passes me by. And I never get PMT, apparently I'm just a cow the whole time. lol)

There is an element of pulling my strings involved I think. Particularly as she refused to help me earlier because she "didn't feel like it" and there were words exchanged.

We haven't got an electric blanket or wii. I reckon the hot bath will do it. Hopefully by then her dad will be home and that normally makes things right for her!
OMG I feel for her if she is being genuine. I had the most awful periods when I was a teenager. The pain used to make me sick and faint. I would literally go green You were lucky Barmaid.
I agree my teenage years of periods was terrible. And now my granddaugther is suffering the same.It is always best to move around to take your mind of it. Or try and get her to do deep breathing.......right down into her stomach and breath out slowly, Something like you was taught when you was in labour. Hope it helps. If she won't take tablets than get her liquid ibuprofen.
OMG2 Some very hard responses. I can still vividly remember my teenage periods doubled in pain and vomiting on the first day every month. Believe me if exercise or not giving in to it would have helped then I'd have tried it. The disprin should help a little and I always used a hot water bottle. If she does agree to take pills eventually try Feminax. Gently massaging the tummy may help.
(I used to aim a hairdrier at myself sometimes too)
Is it aspirin based? Aspirin thins blood, so I don't know if that will make matters worse.
If she's not putting it on I really feel for her. Mine were terrible and I was on prescribed medication from age 13 to try to stop it. Eventually I had to go on the pill (at 14) and take them end to end for three months at a time to reduce the suffering. If you think she's being truthful, take her to chat to the GP as there's lots they can do to help.
I had an evil time as a teenager (well, and for a lot longer after that, too). The day I started, my mum told me that there was nothing wrong with me, and sent me off for sports practice and hurdling. I must admit that she did the right thing, the exercise helped very much with the pains - but it was the last thing I wanted to do. Hot water bottles, Feminax pills - if she'll take appropriate meds for the time of the month then that would help - but if she won't take painkillers then I don't know what else to suggest.
My daughter suffered quite a bit when she was young, it was hot-water bottle and disprin for her. She eventually went on a low dose pill which helped.
I am another who found that exercise made things worse not better...yes a hot bath...hot tea used to help me too
Definitely invest in a hot-water bottle BM, they're brilliant with or without painkillers. Like others I too suffered with them during my teenage years. I tried exercising but it just made it worse and I felt sick.
