If you are sick while asleep can you choke to death?

You hear of people being so drunk they are sick and choke to death but can that happen if you are just naturaly asleep?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.As you suggest, only people who have some brain impairment (e.g. through alcohol or other drug use, or through an injury to the brain) are normally at risk of choking to death from vomiting while asleep. ('Asleep' is not really an accurate term under such circumstances, anyway. 'Unconscious' would probably be more accurate).
Even young babies, who have very little control over their bodies, wake upon vomiting and thus avoid choking.

My uncle was 28 when he had an epileptic fit in his sleep and choked on his vomit and died. He was fit and healthy and didn't drink. A friend woke up to find lots of sick on her pillow after drinking too much and hadn't known she'd done it. If you are sick you may panic and inhale it whether you are awake or asleep and choke. Not nice.
