But anyway, my friend was hypnotised and within a month was smoking again. I think it works like the self-fulfilling-prophey, psychosemanic stuff. If you're told you don't smoke anymore, you don't think you do, so you don't, and then hey presto you're a non-smoker!
It's like when you hear about miracle drugs curing diseases, how many people would miraculously feel better if you gave them a smartie every day, but told them it was a wonder-drug that will rid them of their illness?
I gave up at New Year and have lost weight because I replaced my ciggies with celery sticks, chopped carrots, seeds, etc. so it was kind of the start of a new life style.
A colleague of mine tried this and he had to go every 2 weeks and it seemed to work while he was regularly visiting the therapist but as soon as he stopped he was back on it. It may work for some but I have never met anyone who has given up by any other method than "Cold Turkey".
Natalie, while on this subject, did you manage to give up?
I used to know a hypnotherapist and my dad does abit on the side as well, councelling etc. You need to actually want to give up for a start to let the hypnotherapy work, if you dont there is no point in doing it as like you have seen some of the other answers they knew people who went straight back on it, if you really want to quit then do it by all means but if you are umming and arring about it don't waste your money.I have quit twice for 9 months at a time and am now still smoking because i enjoy though thinking about quiting for good once and for all as i know i can do it. Both times i went cold turkey and did it. i wont put in here why i restarted the second time as that is personal unfortunately, but anyway the first time i put a stone of weight on so i started again to lose it. Then i quit again and controllled what i ate and didn't put anything on at all, so i know i can do it i just enjoy it too much regretfully i wish i never started.
I tried patches, zyban (which made me go doolaly) and will power all to no avail. I was really sceptical about hypnotherapy, but went for it. Now been stopped smoking for over a year. I also know that I will never go back to smoking. I spent 300 - the hypnotherapist I went to said there were plenty of poeple cheaper (and even gave me the numbers) but said she was the best. I thought I would give it a go with her (one on one seesion) and it took around 2 hours. It still did take a bit of will power. Best 300 I ever spent.
That said, a colleague of mine went afterwards as they saw me stop (and they smoked far less than me) - he hasn't been able to stop. He stops for a while then starts again.
The 300 covers us for life so we can go back if needed - he's been back once but not since.
With the weight loss - i am also 2 stone lighter than I was when I smoke - that has been purely down to will power though
El D - I find myself in agreement with you a lot of the time but on this occassion we are miles away:
Personally, I don't think it is as easy as saying "take control" and stop - Nicotine is an addictive drug as well as the habit itself - not everyone is strong enough to break it by itself - which is why there are so many products available to help - most people have a vice of some sort - at least gingerflaps is trying to do something.
At the end of the day, some will power will be required in all the treatments, but help is out there if you need it.
