My five year old daughter occasionally has a purple tinge to her lips but this morning it was very noticeable (I actually thought she might have used felt pen on them). Is this something I should be concerned about? Thanks

Sherrard, I believe it can be a symptom of several conditions - worth popping her round to the doc's. I've not heard of it in children but in older people I believe it can indicate circulatory problems.

Just google it actually - have frightened the broccoli out of myself. Off to the quacks tomorrow!
You definitely need to get it checked out by your GP.

It might (and I strongly stress, only MIGHT) be a symptom of a congenital heart defect. (Google 'cyanosis')

Googled ^ even
purple lips basically is a sign of lack of oxygen. Take her to docs could be anything from an allergy to something more serious.
My little girl had exactly the same problem when she was about 5. I took her to see the doctor who said ( yawn) it maybe a virus. Not happy with that answer i took her for a second opinion. He totally checked her out and told me to make a diary of when these incidents occurs, he also said he was not concerned because her tongue was not blue. After a few weeks i noticed her lips had stopped going blue and it never happened again.
I would take her to be checked out, just in case, but hopefully she will be fine xx
If she is not shirt of breath....her fingers and toes are not blue.......she plays and runs quite normally, then there is nothing to worry about.

Congenital heart disease bad enough to cause ? cyanosis would have been picked up well before the age of five years.

Go to see your GP for reassurance, but it is extremely unlikely that there is anything to worry about.
sher, let us know how things go at the gp.

Hi all - took my daughter to see the doctor today and she had a thorough look at her (temperature, in mouth, breathing, thing on finger to measure the oxygen in her blood) and all was fine. However, if it happens again we have to take her to the doctors straight away (outside of normal hours to the drop-in centre) and if it happens and she is unwell at the same time we have to take her to A & E. Thanks for your answers and concern.
good news sher. better safe than sorry esp, with children.
