eyes

Hi I wonder if any one could tell me what this is. Last night, just out of the blue, I started seeing something floating in front of my left eye. It looks like a cobweb(the only way I can describe it) and when I move my eye it obviously moves too. Does anyone have any idea what this could be as its a bit un-nerving. I am diabetic and am wondering if it has any connection to this.

Floaters. Very common.

Floaters are associated with diabetes.......no treatment is required and they are not dangerous.

Still, it's a good idea to get it checked by an expert - vision is very precious!

and also most people over the age of 70, retinal tears, retinal detachment, and large degrees of nearsightedness.

Thanks for replies guys. I always thought that floaters were just a kind of dot that moved around. This is much more than that, is it just the same? Never had anything like this before.

Thanks Pixi, do they tend to last for very long? This happened last night and I thought it would be gone this morning after a nights sleep, but it is just as bad and yes very annoying.

But floaters are opaque aren't they (I have them too, without diabetes) if it's a blurry/cobwebby patch then it could be a symptom of an ocular migraine (which I also get), not a problem just annoying, see here http://www.allaboutvi...s/ocular-migraine.htm

Its worth getting it checked out, mumsie - it can also be viterous jelly breaking away from the retina. I suffer from floaters, but a couple of years ago, I was out shopping, and a brownish cobweb type thing blocked my vision, it really freaked me out. I rang Moorfields in London and they said to come up the following day to A & E, which I did, and after many tests, they confirmed some viterous jelly had come away in a large lump from my retina.

This can sometimes tear the retina, but in my case, it hadn't. Yours does sound just like floaters, but I would get it checked out all the same.

Wow, thanks for all your answers....Fitzer, I have just looked on your thread and don't think it is the same as what I am 'seeing'.Thanks anyway...Den53, I will certainly get this checked out if it doesn't go in a day or two. And Pixi,thanks for the info again. This is most annoying..as I'm typing this out all I can see are these cobwebby bits floating around GGGRRRR

Where would be the best place to go first to get it checked out....My GP..Diabetic Nurse....opticians.....or A&E ????? Sorry for sounding a bit neurotic:-(

mumsie, pop into your local optician and make an appointment. They have all the equipment to look into your eye and see what's happening - no point in going to the GP on this one. IMO.

Thanks Boxtops, thats what I thought. I will go to my opticians ( I wear glasses, so they have all my records etc) if it doesn't clear soon.

You should see your GP who will refer you to the Emergency Eye Clinic. It is almost certain if they are new floaters and look like a cobwet that you have a Vitreous Detachment which is common, but they like to check that there are no retinal tears. You will stop seeing the floaters as your eyes adjust.

Apparently common as you get over 50 or younger if you are short sighted.

I have now had this happen in both eyes.

Please see a doctor.
