Is there anything similar I can buy without a prescription? For itchy skin that doesn't respond to any other treatment. Thanks all.

I use Lanacane cream but I have no idea if that would work for you. I only use it on heat spots or insect bites and sometimes on sunburn.

Timodine uses hydrocortisone to reduce the inflammation which causes itching. As that's a corticosteroid it's only available on prescription, so there will be no directly similar treatments available on an 'over the counter' basis.

However pharmacists really know their stuff and are often overlooked by people seeking appropriate medications. (Most pharmacies, even those in supermarkets, have a private room where you speak to the pharmacist in confidence). So, if you don't want to seek a prescription from your doctor, it might be worth talking to your local pharmacist. He or she may well know of a product which can help you.

As Chris states, a Pharmacist can help greatly. I had a similar problem and was advised by a Tesco Pharmacist to use "E45 Itch Relief Cream" - it's not that expensive and it really does work and is available over the counter.Hope this helps.

I successfully tried calendula ointment, but my itch may very well be from a different cause.

I've recently discovered Eurax cream (off the shelf) and found it very effective against an itchy rash I had.

I've found that lavender oil extremely effective against itches - I used it a lot when my daughter had chicken pox. You an also buy Daktacort cream over the counter which also relieves itches

I used E45 Itch cream for my legs, around my ankles and lower leg my skin gets quite dry and itchy at times. You have to use it at regular intervals for it to be effective.

The E45 cream did not seem to work for me,but the Eurax is quite effective. I also found Sudocrem to be soothing.

Agree with Buenchico (when did I ever not!) that it is a good idea to see your doctor or a pharmacist. They can often diagnose something that you have overlooked and get to cure the cause of the rash rather than the effect (itching). I speak from experience as twice in my life I was merrily applying Eurax which stops the itch until you think, this has been going on for rather a long time.

I had a similar skin itch problem recently, went to the chemist and was able to buy a
Hydrocortisone cream with no prescription.

It carried the name Actavis, was quite cheap and it solved the problem.
