What is it that actually makes you cough so much when you have a bad cold and cough? Why so much irritation? Driving me mad !

If you smoke it could be that. I've just had a really bad cold for a couple of weeks, I have a little bit of a cough now but its not too bad. My son and other people who smoke have a hacking cough and still feel like poo... when I smoked and got cold I was the same.......

i hate to admit that I do smoke! (my one big downfall) I have to try and stop soon, I know its a killer really. I thought it maybe just the catarrh laying on my chest and nasal area
Irritation from secretions pooling at the back of your throat
A cough is a reflex extra mucus is produced during illness to catch any bacteria and stop more of whatever's made you ill from entering your body, and when it hits a sensitive spot it triggers the reflex so you cough it back up this is to stop the mucus from entering your lungs

I've tried stopping smoking once and failed, but I will try and try again, as I hate the addiction it brings. I'll need tons of luck when I pick the right day to stop --and not tell anyone for fear of failing haha x
pusskin, never give up trying to give up :)

Don't do it on 1st Jan, that's asking for trouble IMO, maybe the middle of January instead. Hope you are better soon.
