stitches on the inside

I had an op called Z Plasty to mend a scar a while ago and the doc said that he had put stitches on the inside of the wound and the outside. How the wotsit do they put stitches on the inside??

I would be guessing before they stitch the outside ? I imagine you can stitch tissue inside the wound when it is still open ( like an artery or something...I'm not very medical...), then stitch the whole thing closed ? Dunno if I'm making much sense here...

These would be subcutaneous sutures.  Sutures are put in the wound just under the skin ("subcutaneously") and the wound is drawn closed.  The effect of this is that the wound heals with minimal scarring.

I had a hernia op when i was younger and they had dissolvable stitches on the inside opening.
