For a while I opted for acrylic nails instead and they looked fine but it got too costly after a while so gave up. Various Sally Hansen products which claim to work, DON'T on me. Maybe I'm just unlucky. Good luck Tinker, hopefully someone else on this site will have some good ideas.
OPI is very good tinks, they sell that on QVC,
they do different strengtheners and polishes,
their nail polish with strengthener in it called 'OPI nail envy' is good.
have a look on ebay, there's some on there.
i used to bite my nails and have recently let them grow,
it's amazing how much better you feel when you've decen't nails on show, isn't it?
i took this piccy of them the other night, just incase i was tempted to start nibbling again! lol

This stuff works...
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
Right now-(I'm using a nail hardener made by Aldi(yes-you heard that right!)-but it was a 'limited edition'-so no longer available-it was only £1.99, but has really helped my pealing nails.

This might sound daft, but it was a tip someone who had the most beautiful nails gave me years ago - and it works. Every time you wash your hands make a point of scrubbing your nails very gently and massaging the cuticles back - and paint your nails regularly - and use nail hardener if your nails are weak. I think it's a psychological thing - it makes you conscious of taking care of your nails. I used to nibble - but I followed this advice and I've had nice nails ever since.
Get yourself some OPI Nail envy and Avoplex oil, both of these products worked for me. I got them first from QVC (there is a website) but are available in some Boots shops or John Lewis (both have websites) you might even be able to get them in a Beauty Salon. You use the Nail envy like a clear nail polish adding a coat every couple of days and massage the oil into the cuticles every night at bedtime.
I have tried all sorts and have come to the conclusion that, as Naomi says, it's much to do with trying to take more care generally. Rubbing oil into the cuticle is the best thing. Nail hardeners do just that, they harden the existing nail, but they don't solve the problem of how your nails are. NuNail is one of the cheapest products but is just as effective.
If you want them to grow you need to lay off the false nails. They'll be ruining your own nails underneath. I know you say you want them to look nice as people see your hands a lot but they can look nice while they are short as long as they are maintained nicely.
When you file them don't go from side to side, just file in one direction.

OPI Nail Envy used as a nail polish. Sally Hansen Radiant Hants nails & Cuticles Cream. Smells lovely and great for cuticles. A tube lasts for ages. I get them both from ebay. Also Almond Oil from Boots/Tesco. quite oily so rub in at night and then put some cotton gloves on. Good luck .. Oh yes, and when you do housework or wash up always always wear rubber gloves.
